Was quoted a ridiculous price by the council so got in touch with these guys and they have been spot on. A fair price and I'm chuffed with the work they've done. Would definitely use them again for any future work

Thank you to all involved. The company very efficiently took care of all the permit and approval paperwork with the local authority. They then expertly removed the old Kerbs and paving, fitted new dropped Kerbs and perfectly re-laid the paving – sloping to align with the new Kerbs. Everything left clean and tidy. They know their business and we thoroughly recommend their services.

We are fully licenced and insured drop kerb contractors, partnering with the local council and Highways Authority to carry out every job in compliance with all essential regulations.

In most cases you don’t need to apply for anything from the council, we take care of all of that for you. We will submit the application and you will receive an email from the council on approval.

A kerb drop is a legal necessity if you want to drive over the pavement onto your residential or commercial property.

Any entry onto a public highway from a residential or commercial driveway area must have a vehicle crossover.

Kerb dropping permits vehicles to cross the pavement from the road to a driveway and it is a legal necessity if you wish to drive across the pavement onto your property.

The law regarding the access states: If you intend to drive a vehicle over the footway in to your driveway off a highway, then you will need make these changes to your access.

If you do not, you must never drive over the footway. If you do this, you are breaking the law and enforcement action may be taken to stop such practice.

Kerb drops, also referred to as vehicle access crossovers, are an adaptation to the footpath. It involves lowering the kerb and laying new foundations to the paving to make it possible for a car to be driven onto the front area of a property.

The work includes lowering the kerbstones and bolstering the pavement to create a ramp, and must only be performed by an authorised company with Street Works Accreditation, and who have the necessary Public Liability insurance to fulfill the local authorities requirements.

Vehicle access cross overs consist normally of 3 or 4 dropped kerbs with a tapered or transition kerb on either side. The conventional maximum total width at road level for a VAC is 3.6 metres (i.e. normally 4 kerbs).

The massive growth in demand for off-street parking has seen a growing number of people drop kerbs to establish car standing at the front of their properties.

Research by home insurer Direct Line shows that off-street parking is regarded by estate agents as a beneficial feature which adds market value to a residential or commercial property. This, combined with escalating parking restrictions in many residential areas, has resulted in planning applications  increase massively over recent years.

But while adding car standing space to the front of your home may well add market value to your property, there are many things to think about, not least environmental issues, and flooding is a major worry.

When you replace a front garden with hard standing, rain can no longer absorb into the ground. As more and more households take this step, the collective effect severely increases the threat of flooding, so it’s important to include drainage in your plans.

Planning permission is generally needed if you wish to drop the kerb outside your building to permit a car to cross the pavement. This is due to the fact that the pavement might need to be reinforced to take the weight of vehicles and help prevent them from damaging the surface or any pipes or cables below. It is also to ensure the new access will never be a safety hazard to other highway users.

You can learn if you need planning permission by getting in touch with your local council (you can find the relevant council at the government website). How much it costs to apply will depend upon your location.

If permission is granted, you then you need to find a local specialist to perform the work for you.

It’s certainly not a DIY job as the council will have requirements that service providers must meet. Some will only allow you to use their endorsed contractors, while others allow you to use your own, as long as they are accredited to the requirements of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, and hold public liability insurance. For this case, there might be an additional charge for highway inspections by the council.

But first it’s worth establishing if permission is likely to be given. Below is a list of considerations. If any one of these criteria is not met, planning permission is likely to be declined:

  • Your front garden must be large enough for you to park your vehicle entirely on your property.
  • The kerb must be at minimum 4.8 m from the front of your house; or 6m if the parking area is in front of an entrance or garage.
  • The parking area should be at least 2.4 m wide.
  • The proposed access to your property should be more than 10m away from a road junction; 15m away from busy junctions or on primary roads.
  • It must be at least 1.5 m away from street lamps and various other street furniture.
  • It must meet visibility guidelines; this depends on the type of road.
  • Suitable drainage must be provided to remove the excess surface water.
The extraction of tree roots should be avoided.
  • The slope from your home to the road must not be too steep.
  • Finally, you as the homeowner must agree to the kerb being dropped; for example, a renter can not apply on their landlord’s behalf.

Q and A’s

Prices vary depending on where you live, how many kerbs are to be dropped and whether or not you wish to extend an already-dropped kerb. Some councils or contractors will provide an extended, dropped kerb at no charge. Others may charge up to £1800. The entire job takes about 1 to 2 hours.

Highways Act 1980, Section 184 makes it an offense to drive a vehicle over a footway or verge where there is no vehicle crossing. These are the physical lowering (or dropping) of the kerb and permission to allow vehicles to cross on the public footway.

Five kerb sections will be required to make a driveway average. Assuming the Council owns the footpath and road, you will need to get permission from your local Council. The Council could refuse permission, as a roads authority, planning authorities, or both.

A dropped kerb is the sloped area where the vehicle crosses from the road to the front of the property. This is most often a driveway with drop kerb.

An obstruction is defined as a vehicle that is parked fully or partially on a dropped kerb. Local authorities or the police can enforce the violation. As absurd as it might sound, you can receive a PCN to park across your own dropped-kerb.

Parking across a dropped street is a parking violation that can result in a Penalty Cost Notice. If you park across a dropped curb, you will be charged with an offense unless you have permission.

Adding a spot for a car will undoubtedly bring extra value to your property, but the amount will naturally depend on whereabouts you live. Keep in mind, however, that dropping a kerb on your property outside will require you to submit an application.

Between the junction’s entrance and the proposed location for vehicular access, there must be at most 10m. Your vehicle cannot be parked in an area that exceeds the roadway or pavement.

You will need to obtain permission to drop the kerb from your property so that a car can cross the pavement. Because vehicles can cause damage to the pavement, or to any pipes or cables under it, the pavement may need reinforcement.

Dropped kerb is required if you plan to drive your vehicle across the footway from your driveway onto a highway. A dropped kerb is required for any vehicle that crosses the footway. If you do this, you may be charged with breaking the law.
